Random Musings: Do Your Books Ever Embarrass You?

. 2.01.2019 .
Greetings people,

It’s been just over two (or is it three?) weeks since I last showed my face here. My laptop decided to stop working. Initially, I thought it was the charger and promptly ordered a new one. Imagine my surprise when it arrived and the laptop still wouldn’t come on. Welp, can’t even be mad. I’ve had it for ages and it’s certainly done its job. It’s just tough as I hadn’t planned on replacing it until the start of med school which isn’t till the Fall. Laptops are pricey guys.

Currently typing this on the Notes app on my phone, decided to simply make do with what I have for now. Oh by the way, happy new month!  That was definitely the fastest January ever.
PS: This book is totally unrelated to this post. I just really love this picture and can’t believe I took it.

So, I’ve got a question for you guys ; do your books ever embarrass you? Like do you cringe hard when the thought of someone seeing the book you’re reading pops up?   I tend to be diverse in the fiction that I read (barring fantasy, still trying to work on that) but I absolutely love historical romance and chick-lit.  These two genres, especially the first one tend to make people roll their eyes and if I’m being honest, I’ve been embarrassed to read such books in the past. I’ve even gone as far as making sure the covers don’t show if I’m reading on the bus or something.

There can definitely be some snootiness when it comes to what books people should read and it’s something I’ve let disturb me before. Not disturb like deeply but still. It seems so silly to type out and you might be reading this thinking , girl you need to get out of your head. I totally agree and I’ve been doing just that. Well, trying to.  Getting out of my head when it comes to what I read (and what I do in general) has been so refreshing and if anything I said seems familiar to you then you should totally try it.

I don’t really have an aim for this post, it was just a random thought. What better place to dump random thoughts than on a blog am I right ?

So tell me, have you ever felt weird or embarrassed for reading a particular book or liking a particular genre?

  1. The random thoughts make the best blog posts!

Erm, I know I would feel extra awkward if I walked into church with a sleazy romance novel :p

But I don't recall ever being embarrassed by a book.

  2. I used to read a looot of chick lit in middle school and I don't remember feeling embarrassed about it, but from high school onward, I remember deciding that I should probably read less chick lit and instead read more "substantial" novels. Nowadays, I'm all about reading a variety of genres, and I'll enjoy chick lit on occasion without any guilt! But I have noticed that if I'm thinking of reviewing chick lit, I'm more critical as I'm reading through it, maybe even a little snooty. But in the last few years, I've realised that there's nothing wrong with reading and enjoying a fun, light book -- no need to be snooty about it! // Recently I've been rereading the Harry Potter series, and for some reason I sometimes feel embarrassed carrying the books around, even though I know I have no reason to be. I guess I'm imagining that people are thinking, "You're HOW old and you're still reading Harry Potter??" even almost everyone of all ages loves Harry Potter. Also, the Harry Potter series is categorised with the children's book at my public library!! Not that there's anything wrong with children's books haha. Oh now that I think about it, sometimes I feel embarrassed browsing the teen section in the library too. -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey's
