What To Do When You're Out of Post Ideas

Lack of content is something that I've struggled with at times and I'm certain that I'm not the only one. Sometimes, the ideas just keep flowing and everything is great. For example, August 2017 was a great blogging month for me, the post ideas just kept coming and I was never worried about not having anything to post. But, that hasn't always been the case. There have been times when I have zero post ideas and it can be so frustrating. My post ideas usually just pop into my head so I hate when nothing is popping lol. It's something I still battle with from time to time and this is how I cope with it.

These pictures have nada to do with this post but I'm still going to add them because they were taken in the summer and I'm really missing the summer right now.

-Take a break
This is quite obvious but it's very valid. Sometimes, going away for a bit is just what you need to get your motivation back. Nowadays, it's very easy for blogging to become a chore and that can really interfere with your content. So if you're feeling stifled and pressured, please take a break.

-Don't force it
This post is piggybacking off the first one. When blogging starts to feel like a chore, you might be compelled to churn out posts and more often than not, those posts aren't as good. At least for me, that's the case. It might not always be like that of course. Yes, I know we all want to be consistent. But, consistent quality is better than consistent mediocrity. It's something we all need to remember.

If this means reducing the number of posts you put out weekly or monthly, then so be it. No point in posting ten times a month if only two are top notch. For example, I switched my posting schedule from twice a week to once a week because I just cannot hack it for now. I might change it again but for now, I'm sticking to it and it's definitely helped alleviate some of the stress.
-Read other blogs
Not to copy them but inspiration usually strikes when you least expect it. For example, the idea for this post came while I was leaving a comment on another blog. I can't remember exactly what the post was about but in my comment, I said something about not wanting to put out blog posts just because and that's when the idea for this post popped into my head. Remember, inspiration can strike at any time!

-Write down ideas
I had my laptop with me when I got the idea for this post so I immediately typed down the idea as a draft. I knew the points I wanted to make but I had no idea how I was going to flesh out the post. Nevertheless, I typed it down and eventually, it all began to come together. Like, as I'm typing this, I'm amazed at how everything is coming to my mind. I was kind of scared that I wouldn't have much to say and that the post would be too scanty but, here we are!

The point I'm trying to make is that you should always write down ideas no matter how silly they seem or even if you feel like you don't have much to say on that particular subject. I always write down all my blog post ideas or type them if I don't have a notebook with me. No matter what it is, write it down. You just might be surprised.

I actually put the idea for my post  Why You Should Learn  A New Language on the Notes app on my phone over a year ago. I knew that I wanted to talk about learning languages but I just didn't know what to say. One year later, it all came to me.Yes, that was a pretty long time but it's not always like that I promise. Write your ideas down, it really helps.

-Look at past work
If all else fails, take a look at what you've done in the past and how it has worked. I got the idea for my post;  Four (More) Podcasts To Listen To because I had done something like that before and people really liked it. Sometimes, take a look at your past work and you just might get an idea of what to post on.

This post is for me just as much as it's for you guys. Anytime I'm feeling all flustered because I can't come up with anything, I'm going to refer back to this post. Hope it's been beneficial, thank you guys for reading. xx

  1. "Consistent Quality is better than consistent mediocrity". WORD. That's what I tell myself whenever I get stranded with blog posts and I realize that the idea that comes wouldn't exactly benefit my readers. I just write out the idea and keep it there. If I don't see how I can make such post beneficial, I just ignore till whenever. Putting out irrelevant content can be tempting but I always fight it off and I think I've been winning lol. I love the pictures! xx

    1. That's the same thing I do! Yup you've been winning, I've noticed! :)

  2. writer's block is real...love this post

  3. I've been struggling with writers block lately. I had a great month last month with writing and post ideas, but this month it's just gone downhill! I agree with these tips - especially with taking a break! I also read lots of blog posts when I'm struggling to write.

    1. I can so relate to the ups and downs of post ideas. Reading other blogs is always so helpful, thank you Kat! :)

  4. That writers block is so so real! I’m the same way, the words come when they want . Even though with travel bloggging I find that it’s a bit easier to get posts out because I already know I want to write about a certain place I’ve been, next step is to figure out exactly how I want to share / frame my story. I’ve found that looking at pictures in my archives helps, and as you mentioned, taking a break! - this is necessary for me.

    1. 'The words come when they want'- exactly!
I know what you mean, delivery is everything and sometimes it's so frustrating when you just don't know how to do it. Thank you for stopping by Tiese :)

  5. Lovely, I like it! Have a nice week!

  6. Hey love... Funny thing, as I was reading your blog, a post just popped into my head 😁
So reading other blogs is good for inspiration... I remember when I started, I took lots of break, but I decided to start anew with 2018. Let's see how that goes.

    1. Ayy would you look at that? That's awesome! I hope it goes great, thanks Favour :)

  7. Such great tips, I usually hit up Pinterest for some inspiration when I’m lacking post ideas xx

    Gemma • Gemma Etc . ❤️

    1. I don't use Pinterest very often, I probably should. Thanks for the recommendation Gemma! :)

  8. I used to just put up posts that I wasn't proud of for the sake of it, but now I would much rather just skip a week if I don't have a good idea.
    Aleeha xXx

    1. I do the same! It saves me from putting out content that isn't my best. Thanks for reading Aleeha! xx

I read and appreciate every single comment. I'll definitely check out your blog. ❤
