Blogger Spotlight: Sade of In My Sunday Best

You guys should probably know that I get obsessed with people I think are cool very quickly. Sade is someone who I've always really admired and I promise, it's not in a weird or creepy way. Well, I sure hope it doesn't look that way haha. I really like her because she's so authentic and you can tell just by reading her blog or even just looking at her outfits.

I've been reading her blog since I was in high school, year 10 if I remember correctly. I remember being in the ICT room with my friends and we would scroll through her posts whilst oohing and aahing over her outfits. When she agreed to be a part of my Blogger Spotlight feature, I was elated and so were my friends. She's someone we've all always looked up to and probably always will. Okay, enough of my gushing. Here's my interview with Sade, I hope you enjoy it. If you read this and you don't check her blog out afterwards, I'm hundred percent judging you. xx

What inspired you to start In My Sunday Best?
I was very bored during my first year of undergrad around six years ago and I needed a place to express myself privately – and thus, the blog was born!

What is something you wish you knew when you started blogging?
To be mindful I think… of the things you say and the image you project – you never know who is reading or watching!

In the last few years, there’s been a rise in what has been termed ‘Instagram Bloggers’. People who post gorgeous pictures of their outfits, lifestyle and other things on Instagram as opposed to blogging in the original sense of the word. What do you think of this new ‘blogging trend?’
In my opinion, if you don’t run a blog you’re not a blogger. I think the term ‘influencer’ has risen because of this actually. I think blogging is a completely different kettle of fish to instagram. With blogging you have to think more about the written aspect of everything. What do I want my readers to feel when they read this? How can the photography help get across my thoughts and feelings etc… and then you have seo, and brand relationships too!

Do you ever see yourself ending your blog and if yes, how would you do it?
Oh so many times i’ve come close to clicking the ‘delete your blog’ button. I’m not sure, I think some of the things I’ve touched on I actually come back to read now and again, and the thought of seeing all of my hard work go pooof makes me feel a bit sad. But sometimes I do feel like I may be outgrowing my little space on the web…

Sharing a bit of your life with strangers, how have you coped with it and gotten past your insecurities?
I think my blog is very honest and in itself is a way of me dealing with said insecurities by ‘talking it out’ as it were with readers.

Do you ever feel like it’s all a waste of time and what brings you out of that mindset?
Hmmm I think with the rise of ‘influencers’ and dishonest ways of building an audience, it can all get a little frustrating – especially when brands begin to play the numbers game. But I think you have to remember why you started it all in the first place.

What’s a common misconception people tend to have about you?
I think I can come across as standoffish in real life as I’m quite reserved but once I’m comfortable with someone I’m super silly and laid back!

If you were to create a self-care box, what would be in it?
Candles, face masks, chocolate brownies and the girlfriends box set!

What is your interpretation of the term ‘living your best life?’

I think it’s being unreservedly you! Enjoying every moment there is and allowing yourself to feel happiness in all it’s forms.

Your style is very simple but extremely chic. How do you come up with outfits?
Thank you! I have a general format which revolves around my body shape. I’m an hourglass so I go for mid length dresses that nip in at the waist, or jeans that are high waisted etc.

What are some clothing brands that you’ll always love?
Oooooh for solid basics that will last years I look to Boden and M&S, for more trend driven pieces I look to ASOS, H&M, Sugarhill Boutique and New Look.

What’s your go-to beauty look?
On a daily basis I try to emulate the French style of applying makeup and it’s essentially a my face but better kind of look. It’s a swipe of concealer in places I need it, a light dusting of fixing powder, a tap of warm orange blush, some mascara and a nude lipstick!

Who are your absolute favourite authors and why?
Junot Diaz, Caitlin Moran, Nayyirah Waheed – They all write with such a fervent passion, everything feels like raw magic, it’s unexplainable except you simply cannot put down their books

What’s something wrong in the world that you would correct if you had the power to and why is this thing so dear to you?
Oh so so so many things, but as I’m a black woman, I wish something could be done about racism and sexism. Both ism’s penetrate so deep into every chasm of society and it feels like things will never truly change because white supremacy is something that is so deeply rooted.

Any advice on remaining authentic and true to yourself in our ever changing world?
I think, to just keep on keeping on. Ignore the numbers and focus on the one or two people who are and will be on your side. The tides always change.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Sade's answers to my questions and I think I admire her even more now. I really hope you enjoyed it as much as I did, do check out her blog and her Instagram and I'll talk to you in my next post!
