Habits For A Calmer Life

The world moves at such a fast pace at the moment. There's always something to do, somewhere to be and so on. It's very easy to feel constantly frazzled by the stress of it all. Today I'm going to be sharing some of the habits I have formed that bring calm into my life.

By the way, if you have 25 minutes to spare you should watch this short film on Youtube called Bariga Sugar. It is such a brilliant film and it made me cry so much. My shirt and my neck were soaked with tears.Big things are happening in the Nigerian film industry at the moment and I feel so proud. You should all check the film out.

Anyways, back to the blog post. Here are three habits for a calmer life.

Wake Up Early
I'm a morning person, I've always been. My body is used to waking up early as it is something I've been doing since high school (thanks, mummy!). I wake up at 5:30 AM on weekdays, even earlier sometimes. I personally hate being in a rush in the morning so waking up early gives me enough time to get some things done before I leave for school. I can study a bit, do a quick workout, listen to a podcast, have a good breakfast and so on.

If you ever feel like you don't have enough time during the day, consider waking up a bit earlier. You get to accomplish some stuff and it sets the tone for the rest of your day.  You won't have to rush anything and you'll leave your house feeling calm and in control. Chances are, you'll have a pretty productive day.

Declutter
Decluttering is very important. When my room is in a mess and everything is disorganised, it makes me feel really frazzled. So putting everything in order and getting rid of unwanted stuff makes me feel better. One tip is to declutter your surroundings little by little. You can tackle your closet today and maybe your kitchen the following week. You don't have to do it all at once.

Decluttering doesn't only have to do with objects. Who else hates seeing that red icon on your email app? I know I do, it literally stresses me out so I make sure I always declutter my mailbox. Also, declutter your life. This is a tad bit harder, to be honest, but sometimes you need to get rid of some people. I'm a huge believer in second (and third and fourth) chances but if someone constantly drains you and leaves you feeling anxious or unhappy, you need to remove them from your life. This isn't easy of course, it's not easy at all. But it's going to be better for you.

Stay In The Present
We tend to over analyse things and fret about the past or the future a lot. Well, I know I do. Michael from the Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast (recently started listening to this and I really like it.) said something in a recent episode that I like. I can't remember it word for word but he was practically saying that we shouldn't worry about the past as we can't change it and we shouldn't worry about the future either as it hasn't arrived.

Now, this doesn't mean that we shouldn't reflect on past experiences or plan for our future but we need to stop worrying about them and stay in the present. This sounds quite like something a motivational speaker would say but your present sort of determines your future. So yes, make plans for your future (if you fail to plan, you plan to fail right?) but don't forget to live in the now. This is actually something I've been making a conscious effort to implement in my life as I tend to fret over little things.

My favourite Bible verse, Jeremiah 29:11 pretty much sums it up.It says:
For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. Plans of good and not of evil to bring you to an expected end.

I feel like this post is quite long, sorry about that. I really enjoy writing these 'wellness' posts and I hope you enjoy reading them and that you find them useful. I'm always on the hunt for more wellness 'stuff' to devour. Be it blog posts, books, podcasts and so on. If you have any, please share in the comments section. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.xx

  4. Great tips! Although #1 would definitely make me the opposite of calm..definitely not a morning person. Lol. Decluttering is on my #1 to-do list as I'm moving houses soon.

  7. I've never been a morning person, but it's one of my (many) goals this year to try and wake up a little earlier. On the rare days I do succeed, I definitely notice an increase in my productivity, and my mood seems to be better as well. The same can be said about decluttering as well - when my space is organized, I just feel better. What a great post, thank you for sharing!

  15. I would,t necessarily say I am a morning person but having to go to work every weekday has made me get used to working up early. I tend to even wake up at 7 on weekends but I have realized that I get so much done in the day when I wake up early. I enjoyed reading your post.x
